Carillion celebrates Beetham West Tower groundbreaking

Construction and services company Carillion has celebrated the groundbreaking of key client Beetham Organization Ltd’s new £30 million West Tower development. The inspirational tower is set to be the ‘jewel-in-the-crown’ of Beetham’s Old Hall Street development in the commercial district of Liverpool city centre.

The 40-storey tower will be the tallest building in the city and consists of 120 two-bedroom apartments and seven penthouse apartments. It will also house the Beetham Organization’s flagship office headquarters. Carillion has been on site since July and the scheme is due to be completed in time for the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

Carillion executive director Roger Robinson said: “We are delighted to be involved in this landmark development which will contribute to Liverpool’s ongoing renaissance. This project marks the continuation of Carillion’s very successful relationship with the Beetham Organization, following on from our delivery of the 28-storey Beetham Landmark hotel and residential scheme and the Old Hall Street offices in 2004. We are also currently on site with the 48-storey Beetham Tower in Manchester which is due for completion next year.”

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the presentation of a ‘time box’ containing various objects from the run up to the Capital of Culture year. Carillion will build the capsule into the atrium walls during the two-year construction period. The ceremony was attended by the Beetham Organization Ltd, Carillion Building, Aedas AHR, Capital of Culture team, Boodle & Dunthorne, Liverpool City Council, Ethel Austen Investment Properties and Daily Post/Trinity Mirror Group.
