Joined Carillion in September 2003

“Coming from a family of carpenters, electricians, steeplejacks and bricklayers, I was always destined for a career in the construction industry! Carillion was the company I chose to pursue my career with primarily because it was one of the country's best contractors but also because it seemed to have its heart in the Midlands – an attractive attribute given that most companies seem to have a south east bias.

“I didn’t have to wait until I’d finished my degree before I could get an insight into life on site. During my degree at Loughborough University, I was given the opportunity to undertake two six month placements with Carillion – first as a Trainee Engineer on the construction of an Asda Superstore, secondly on a Residential scheme in Birmingham. It meant that when I graduated and took my place on the Carillion Graduate Training Scheme I already had the knowledge and skills needed to survive on site. In fact I was nominated as “Package Manager” for 3 trades packages – quite a responsibility for a graduate engineer!

“The Graduate Scheme has developed my managerial, technical and people skills and given me the exposure and confidence to seize every new opportunity offered for development in this dynamic and interesting company. You are empowered very early on in your career with responsibility which is both extremely stressful but completely rewarding at the same time. I have spent three years on site and every minute was a new challenge, experience or learning a new skill – all of which I‘m putting to great use in my new role as regeneration manager at Carillion Integrated Solutions”

MEng Civil & Structural Engineering
Joined Carillion August 2005

“Having spent a summer placement and industrial placement with Carillion during my University degree, the opportunity to rejoin a company which looked after my interests was certainly an important factor as to why I became a Carillion graduate. The inductions were great with plenty of opportunity for socialising and networking with fellow colleagues”

“I’m now in my second year of the scheme, having spent the first year as a graduate engineer at Carillion's plain line renewals depot in Duddeston, Birmingham. I’ve gained so many new skills and had the opprtunity to work on flagship projects such as the renewal of Birmingham New Street in Christmas 2004 and Christmas 2005 – a fantastic opportunity”
