Success Stories

Many Carillion apprentices have gone on to successful careers in construction. Many more have great futures ahead of them. Here are just two of them:

Mathew Craig, 26, Lancaster
Senior Technical Officer

"Before I began my Modern Advanced Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering, I was studying sports science. Although it was enjoyable I wanted something a bit different. Having always been interested in construction I applied for the Modern Apprenticeship vacancy at Carillion. The four-years of my training were completed on a block release basis at the CITB Training Centre at Bircham Newton and the College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn. I felt the training was excellent because I got to blend the theoretical aspects I was getting at college with practical experience I was gaining by shadowing a senior engineer. Although the course was intense it was highly enjoyable and very relevant to the skills I use today. I have now been out of college for four-years and regularly use the skills I learned at college in my role as senior technical officer at Carillion Rail Projects. I would recommend the Apprenticeship to anyone who is interested in a career as a civil engineer."

Paul Green, 21, Lancashire
Apprentice

“I joined Carillion as an apprentice after completing my A Levels in electrical & mechanical engineering. Since I’ve been here, I’ve completed a month long course in erecting and a range of other career-relevant courses including Lookout, COSS, RRV-SRS, PTS, motorised trolley, and oxyfuel gas cutting. I’m also getting plenty of ‘hands-on’ experience with my mentor Les Blake. He’s made sure I’ve got the track experience and the rail skills needed to become a linesman then a supervisor – that’s my immediate aim for when I complete my apprenticeship. Eventually I’d like to work as a wiring engineer and I’m confident that with the support of the tutors and trainers at Carillion, I’ll get there”.
