Roads Minister visits Carillion M6 Smart Motorway contract

Carillion hosted a visit by Roads Minister Robert Goodwill to its M6 J5-8 smart motorway contract in Birmingham this week.

15th November 2013
Mr Goodwill was updated on the progress of the project, which when completed in Spring 2014, will help to relieve congestion by using technology to vary speed limits, as well as allow the hard shoulder to be used as a running lane to create additional capacity.

He also spoke to Carillion apprentices who have worked on the project as part of their training, gaining, valuable experience and skills.

Whilst in Birmingham, Mr Goodwill announced that over 9,500 construction jobs will be supported in 2014 by more than £1.9 billion of investment in Britain's roads.

The total investment in 209 schemes is £4.3 billion, £1.9 billion of which will be spent in 2014 alone - more than twice the amount spent in 2013.

Earlier this month, during a visit to Carillion's head office in Wolverhampton, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that Carillion has been awarded another motorway contract. £70 million contract to transform another section of the M6 into a smart motorway.

The Highways Agency awarded Carillion the £70 million contract to transform a further section of the M6 in the West Midlands, between Junctions 10A and 13, into a smart motorway. Advanced enabling works started in September 2013 and the main contract works will follow immediately, with completion scheduled for Spring 2015.
