Carillion has established a leading position in Canada's growing Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP), which is similar to the UK's Public Private Partnership procurement model. Currently we have three hospitals being delivered under a Design-Finance-Build-Maintain model.

Our major projects in Canada that involve construction services include the Royal Ottawa Hospital and Sault Area Hospital, a new Forensic Services and Coroners' Complex in Toronto, and refurbishment and extension of Union Station in Toronto.

Economies of scope

Unlike many competitors, we are able to add a full range of support services to our construction capability. These include property and facilities services; Carillion is currently Canada's largest provider of non-clinical hospital services.

By providing integrated whole life solutions, Carillion can take a holistic approach to assessing short-term versus long-term decisions. Crucially, our interests are aligned with our customers. There is nothing to gain from cutting costs today if it will mean much higher costs in the future.

The time horizon of the concession period for our AFP projects can be as long as 30 years, with the Sault Area Hospital being a good example. So we have every incentive to ensure best value at every stage and in every way.

Decades of experience in Canada

We first started in Canada in 1955 under the banner of the George Wimpey Company. Through the 1970s and 1980s we grew from our base in Toronto to become one of the most prominent names in house and commercial office building in Canada.

In the 1990s we briefly changed our name to Tarmac before adopting the name of Carillion in 1999. In 2008, Carillion acquired Vanbots, one of Canada's leading construction companies.

Our 50+ year track record as a general contractor covers everything from commercial office renovations valued at $1 million to large-scale healthcare projects whose constructed value exceeds $240 million.

Our 20+ year track record in Design-Build services covers 30 projects valued at $1.35 billion.  Our portfolio includes laboratories, universities, colleges, commercial and industrial buildings.

Maintenance services for roads

We have contracts for routine and preventative maintenance of substantial lengths of Provincial highway network. We are the largest provider of road management services in Ontario (through our subsidiary TWD Roads Management) and in the West through Carillion Alberta.
