Background
The first schools to commence were St Andrew's Academy and the St Benedict’s High School in January 2005, closely followed on by Todholm Primary School and Gleniffer High School in March 2005. Schools still to commence on site are Fordbank Primary School, New ND Primary School, West Johnstone Shared Campus, Woodlands Primary School and Linwood High School.
Carillion identified a number of challenges due to the location of these schools within local communities, and the inquisitive nature and vulnerability of school pupils. We knew that the close proximity of our construction sites to the existing schools would be an attraction to the local children and would pose a major safety concern to their parents. Therefore we implemented a programme of presentations to all feeder primary schools in the surrounding areas to each high school we are building.
In order to manage the potential impact of our activities on teachers, pupils and local residents we produced a Disruption Management Plan (DMP) in the form of a school handbook to be given out the aforementioned groups. The DMP identifies the areas that could impact on all parties and details our plans to deal with these factors, thus demonstrating our commitment to managing the causes of disruption and potential safety issues.
The DMP was presented and handed out to the local authority, schools and local community and feedback from all parties proved extremely positive. It is a document that exceeds contractual and statutory requirements and demonstrates Carillion's commitment to managing the expectations of all stakeholders. The DMP fully complies with the Working Well Together 4C's of Co-operation, Communication, Competence and Commitment.
It was put forward for the National Safety Awards and subsequently won first prize for ‘Best Public Safety Initiative’ earlier this year.
