St Benedict’s High School - Introduction

The site is located on Bridge of Weir Road, Linwood, and Renfrewshire on approximately 10.1 hectares of land bounded by a cycle track to the northeast, Bridge of Weir Road to the south and farmland to the west.

Work comprises the construction of a new secondary school which will be developed around the hub of a central social space and administration area. Accommodation will be provided in two two-storey wings.

The two storey structures will be formed using a steel frame. It is envisaged the ground floor slab will comprise suspended pre-cast concrete units and ground bearing cast in-situ concrete. The building elevations will comprise traditional cavity wall construction.

Foundations will be traditional reinforced concrete pad and strip footings bearing onto competent boulder clay or rock dependent on location and have been designed using a ground bearing capacity of 100 KN/m2.

The ground floor area to the north and east wings of the school will be suspended and formed using pre-cast concrete units. The units will span between load-bearing perimeter and dwarf walls. The remainder of the ground floor will be formed using a traditionally reinforced ground bearing concrete floor slab.

The main building frame will be constructed using conventional steel column and beam sections. The upper floors will be formed using composite steel and concrete floors with down stand beam sections connected to the slab via through deck welded shear studs. The structure will be stabilised in both directions using vertical cross bracing to transmit lateral loads to foundation level. The upper floors will be formed using profiled metal deck flooring and cast in-situ concrete of thickness to suit the design.

Finishes will include aluminium framed double glazed windows, solid core laminate internal doors, internal walls of 140mm fair faced concrete block, ·modular suspended ceiling system with lay-in tiles and plasterboard suspended ceiling system, with carpets, vinyl and ceramic floor tiles.

The mono pitched roof structure will comprise cold-formed purlins, positioned at appropriate centres and supported on sloping steel rafters. The roof structure will have plan bracing to allow wind loads to be transmitted along the roof and down through the vertical cross bracing.

External works will complete the project, including new parking and drop off areas being established to the east and south respectively of the new school and the provision of three new sports pitches, two grass and one grit to the extreme west.
