Todholm Primary School is located within the existing area currently occupied by the Todholm School on Lochfield Rd off Barrhead Rd, Paisley. The new building will be located on the area currently occupied by the playing fields.
The new Todholm Primary and Nursery Class will be constructed on the same site as the existing school with the existing school remaining in use during construction. Following completion of the new school the exiting building will be demolished to make way for new playground, parking and pitch. As well as the difficulties of developing the design around existing buildings the site presented further challenges in the form of site levels, heavily trafficked access roads, limited space and flood prevention measures.

A two storey class base wing will be positioned parallel to the southeast boundary. At ground floor level class bases will be positioned either side of a central corridor. At first floor level a corridor will run along the southeast elevation with class base accommodation to the northwest. This is to prevent the upper floor class bases over looking neighbouring houses. The nursery, management and administration facilities will be accommodated in a single storey element, "L" shaped in plan forming an entrance court. The primary and nursery schools main entrances are accessed off of a generous civic space. At the interface between the class base wing and the admin/ management wing will be the dining and gym halls, which will act as the hub of the school. Creative use of hard and soft landscaping will ensure the building is fully integrated with the external play areas and provide a stimulating environmental for children to learn and play.
The plan form has been elevated in a series of interpenetrating mono pitched volumes. The simple clean geometric shapes will provide a variety of internal scale and enclosure while externally the fenestration reflects the use and scale of the rooms behind the facades. A limited palette of brick, render and rainscreen cladding will be used for elevational treatment. Mono pitch roofs are finished in the proprietary standing seam aluminium sections.
High quality paving material is proposed at the main frontage providing a easily identifiable and welcoming entrance. Additional pupil entrances are provided around the perimeter of the site allowing pupils easy access into their playground under the close supervision of staff. Secure parking will be provided on site with dedicated vehicle routes and drop off provision ensuring good separation between pedestrians and vehicles.
