S&C Renewals, Gloucester

A blockade took place for the S&C Renewals contract in Gloucester from November 7th to 17th. Work started on the project in February with preliminary works continuing until the blockade started in November.

This was one of the biggest S&C renewals the Great Western area has seen for 20 years and was carried out during 2002/2003.

Carillion carried out the following work:

    • 28 point ends

    • 9-10,000 tonnes of ballast

    • 2,273 metres of plain line

Resource for the renewals included staff from other areas including signalling/P/way from Crewe, Grantham and Bletchley, Rail Welding were also involved. Banverket used their Swedish track laying machines to install some of the S&C units additional to using PEM/LEMs. Close liaison with the maintainer and the public/highways was needed as Horton Road Level Crossing was closed for the duration of the blockade.
