Redcar and Cleveland schools

The project consisted of design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of five schools – three secondary and two primary – for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Two of the schools, Sacred Hearts Roman Catholic comprehensive and Saint Benedict primary school, are voluntary-aided and share the same site.

The other schools - Gillbrook Technology College, Bydales Secondary School and South Bank community primary school, have been built on separate sites, replacing existing facilities that will be demolished after the works.

Each of the secondary schools has a capacity of 750 places and the primaries will have 330 and 315 places respectively.

The project has been a real success for both the Client and the Carillion team, with commendations from the Authority and external parties including a Public Private Finance award being received in 2007.

A particular success has been the Carillion catering solution for the schools. In a recent Ofsted report for the Sacred Heart school, the team have been commended for the increased uptake in school dinners.

This has been fully supported by Carillion and in particular the Carillion Soft Services manager who had been instrumental in promoting healthy eating with such campaigns as the ‘Healthy Eating Week’ which is held within the school.
