We believe
that sustainability is not an insular activity but that it
should drive the industry forward, towards sustainable construction
We are committed to supporting
environmental and community activities and in 2001 contributed
over £500,000 in cash or in-kind support to numerous activities
in all our areas of work.To enable us to achieve this we are
dedicated to the investment of environmental and community
initiatives.
Because we donate at least 1%
of our profits (in cash or in kind) to environmental and community
initiatives we are members of the PerCent
Club Index
We are involved in two Government
and Industry funded Partners in Innovation Projects:
We provide data,
staff time and case records for the Sustainability
Accounting project.
We are involved
as part of the Major Contractors Group in the project
Improving Corporate Sustainability Performance.
During 2001 we donated £25,000
to The Wildlife Trusts
through a sponsorship campaign, called Carillion Natural Habitats.
This money was used to fund three projects, for example, £8,500
was donated for work at Moorbridge Pond Nature Reserve. This
is a site of importance as it is one of the few wetland areas
remaining in Nottingham.
The Wildlife Trusts, a national charity which
operates through a network of 46 local Wildlife Trusts, has
363,000 members and manages more than 2,300 nature reserves.
"We are confident that this new
partnership will prove to be beneficial not only in supporting
the conservation work of The Wildlife Trusts but also
raising public awareness and generating interest in wildlife
issues. We hope that the project launched at Nottinghamshire
Wildlife Trust will lay the foundations for future conservation
projects with Carillion"
Dr Simon Lyster, Director General of The Wildlife Trusts
In 2002 a further £25,000 will
be made available for regional branches of the Wildlife Trusts
to apply for money from the Carillion Natural Habitats sponsorship,
to fund specific projects to benefit wildlife.
We not only invest Carillion
money, but also our staff time and experience.
We are a core member of CIRIA
(Construction Industry and Information Association) and we
provide funding, expertise and experience to project steering
committees and publications. In addition, our Engineering
and Environmental Director has been elected to the CIRIA council.
Carillion's commitment to
sustainability is widely recognised in the construction sector.
Carillion is also committed to sharing knowledge and is an
active participant in CIRIA's activities, including the CIRIA
DTI Sustainability Pioneers' Club. This enables Carillion
to share knowledge with a group of forward thinking industry
companies, who are developing practical ways of taking forward
sustainability issues within their organisations.
Crown House Engineering stands
out as a leading practitioner, implementing innovative practices
and working with us in developing these practices and promoting
them.
As the Building Services Industry
continues to identify areas where it can have a positive impact
on the environment, organizations like Crown House Engineering
will help the industry develop and convert innovative solutions,
such as off-site manufacturing, into practical and successful
business opportunities.
I have no doubt that a close
relationship between BSRIA and Crown House Engineering will
bring tangible benefits to all parties involved.

We are members of the Sustainable
Construction Indicators Pioneers Club. As member we are carrying
out trials on industry Key Performance Indicators as well
as using our knowledge to help others make the first step
in terms of producing Environment/Sustainability reports.
Schal, a part of the Carillion
Building business, has been instrumental insetting up the
South London Construction Best Practice group. The inaugural
meeting included a presentation on sustainability.
Carillion have been involved
in the development of, and will be providing trial projects
for the CEEQUAL (Civil Engineering Environmental Quality and
Assessment) scheme. This will be a model applicable to Civil
Engineering to measure their environmental quality (similar
to BREEAM).
In addition to the above the
Community
section of the report details examples of community initiatives.
