Learning and Development

We recognise employees as our greatest assets and that this can only be enhanced if we aim to become a learning organisation.

We invest significantly in the development of our people. We aim to become a Learning Organisation by sharing and respecting the different skills, knowledge and expertise within the organisation to allow us to maximise the contributions of all our people to achieve sustainable profitable growth.

Our training is mainly delivered through Learning Works, our shared learning resource.

We also support our employees’ development through secondments and participation in industry associations’ e.g. Movement for Innovation, Construction Best Practice Programme, and environment or community activities e.g. Partners in Leadership.

In order for us to continue to improve our environmental performance, it is necessary for all of our employees to have a good level of awareness and understanding of environmental issues. Therefore, as part of our commitment to sustainability we have set objectives and targets to deliver sustainability training to our employees. Please refer to the target section of the report to review our 2001 and 2002 training targets.

During 2001 we provided formal training for 3368 employees (equating to 8500 delegate days), of which 1021 employees received environmental training courses. The cost of delivering this training during 2001 was approximately £838,000.

Due to the diverse nature of our Business Groups and the environmental aspects associated with them, it is often necessary for Business Groups to provide specialist sustainability knowledge. For example:

  • We centrally provided on-site training for 959 staff (equating to 6534 delegate days)

  • 16 staff from Carillion Rail attended a conservation training day provided by the Field Studies Council.

  • Several Business Groups provided The Natural Step training course, to senior and middle management. The training identified the basic principles of sustainability when applied to the design and construction of buildings.

  • 48% of Carillion employees attended a ‘learning at work’ day on 17th May 2001, which was a combination of on-line learning, workshops and shadowing.

  • We routinely place delegates with the Cambridge University Sustainability Learning Network Programme.

    Training that meets learning needs

In order to increase the accessibility of training to all our staff we developed a user-friendly Intranet site named People Pages. This site allows employees to easily access a whole range of learning materials. For example, an on-line Sustainability Awareness course is available, which was developed in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board and Casella Stanger. This interactive module is designed for all levels within the Construction Supply Chain from Demolition Contractors to Design Engineers and can be completed within 20 – 25 minutes, or at the operator’s own pace. In the future, this course will be a pre-requsite for other sustainability courses we are developing.

The provision of mentoring is a key part of the development of many of our staff. Mentoring provides the opportunity for operational and junior staff to receive support and guidance from senior members of staff. In addition we often provide mentors to other companies including clients and suppliers. Therefore, encouraging the transfer of knowledge within and out with our Business Groups.
