This report provides information on our environmental, social and economic performance during 2002 and covers all our operating businesses, both within the UK and overseas.
This web-based report is supported by a 4-page summary in our Annual Report and Accounts and a Sustainability Review and Leaflet, which provides highlights of our 2002 sustainability performance.
In line with current best practice, this report follows current best practice, including the ACCA Environmental, Social and Sustainability Reporting on the World Wide Web Guidance and the Turnbull Report. These guidance documents have assisted us in clearly demonstrating the sustainability improvements that have occurred within our businesses and their related projects during 2002.

We are particularly pleased to report that we have been ranked in the top quintile of the 122 companies surveyed by Business in the Community (BITC) in its first Corporate Social Responsibility Index.

Carillion have secured a prominent position in the 1st quintile of the Business in the Community corporate social responsibility index, with an overall score of 84.6%, one of the highest scoring companies within the 122 FTSE 350 companies that took part in the survey. The graph below provides the summary for Carillion’s overall performance across the corporate responsibility agenda, compared against other companies in our sector and the overall index results.

We also received recognition in the 7th BiE (Business in the Environment Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement, scoring 78.8% (up from 72.2% last year).
Our high performing status with regard to the social angles of sustainability is also reflected in our approach to specific construction projects, for instance our recently completed Great Western Hospital in Swindon. In praising the development as one of the most sustainable in the UK, the Building Research Establishment were also noted the social engagement, and economic drivers throughout the project, which in some instances greatly exceeded all projects previously assessed, providing the new benchmark for performance.
The diagram below is taken from the Movement for Innovation (M4i) document entitled “Sustainability Lessons from PFI and similar Private Initiatives”, and demonstrates that overall the project sets the new benchmark for sustainable buildings in the UK.

The project set exemplary safety standards with 1.1 million consecutive incident free man-hours. Carillion Health set up a job centre on the site to promote creation of local jobs during construction. The construction project created more than 150 jobs locally. Work and teacher placements were also offered, and links set up to community representatives such as the Police, businesses, residences and schools.
