Environmental Helpline

During 2002 we received 59 calls to our 24hour environmental helpline, a significant decrease from the 126 calls received in 2001. There are several possible reasons for this decrease;

  • our staff have continued to receive training and support in the management of their environmental impacts
  • our internal environmental advisors are now part of a shared service and are often the first port of call for assistance from our projects
  • we have not actively promoted the helpline during 2002

It is our intention over 2003 to review the service that our helpline provides and if appropriate we shall re-brand the helpline as a Sustainability Helpline. Part of the re-branding would entail further communication of the services provided by the helpline to our project and plc staff.

We have continued to monitor the subject of calls received and have compared these to 2000 and 2001 as detailed in the graph below. The need for assistance with environmental management issues continues to be the main source of enquiry receiving 27% of calls. This includes a range of topic areas from storage of materials to sustainable design.

Legislation (20%) and waste management (17%) were the next most frequently requested subject areas and include a range of topics from issues surrounding the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001 to the most appropriate way of disposing of lithium non-rechargeable batteries.

Please complete a feedback form should you require further information on the enquiries we received from our projects, or the responses we provided.
