Compliance and Complaints

Our ability to conduct our activities in a manner that prevents disruption, nuisance and pollution can be measured by the number and type of complaints and prosecutions that we receive. We are pleased to report that for the 1st time since publishing our sustainability reports that we were not prosecuted in 2002 in relation to any environmental issues. This is a considerable achievement considering the number and complexity of our various projects. Unfortunately we were prosecuted 4 times in relation to Health and Safety issues. Details of which can be found within our specific health and safety report, which is in the health and safety section of this report.

In addition, our complaints recorded through our head office reporting system slightly increased from 244 in 2001 to 247 in 2002.

The types of complaints received indicate that following miscellaneous complaints, noise continues to be one of the most frequent cause for complaint. We shall continue to reduce our potential to cause noise nuisance through good on site management and delivery of our toolbox talks. In addition, we are encourage to see that our complaints for noise nuisance in 2002 was less than half of those received in 2001 and that we did not receive any section 60 notices from Local Authorities. This helps to demonstrate that although we have received some complaints that we have improved our performance.

In 2002 we introduced a new category of complaints, namely ecological complaints. This was due to the fact that a number of complaints within Infrastructure Services and Capital Projects referred specifically to ecological issues.

We shall continue to seek to reduce the nuisance generated by our activities and to record the complaints received throughout 2003.
