Alcohol & Drugs Policy

POLICY

Definition

We are committed to a safe and healthy working environment, and will not allow the consumption, selling or attendance at work under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol on company premises. (Enhanced arrangements apply in Carillion Rail, Highway Maintenance, SkyBlue and Expanded Piling to meet their specific business needs).

Scope

All Carillion employees working in the UK (*)
All SkyBlue Associates (Temporary workers) working on Carillion or other clients’ premises or sites
All temporary / sub contract workers working on Carillion premises
(*) Carillion offices outside of the UK are required to adopt the principles of this policy and ensure its compliance in accordance with local legislation.

Objectives

  • To encourage a safer and healthier working environment for our people
  • To ensure that everyone is aware of the acceptable standards
  • To ensure that anyone suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs is treated in a fair and consistent manner
  • To ensure that anyone who advises their line manager that they have a drug or alcohol related problem is given the necessary support to resolve their problems
  • Where applicable, to support the specific requirements of our client’s and the market sector in which we work

Principles

  • There are Carillion business’ that due to the nature of their client base or market sector require an alcohol and drugs policy that reflects special needs and differs from the above. Any employee to whom this type of arrangement applies will be notified as part of their employment offer and induction process.
  • The rail businesses will continue to apply the rail industry standard to comply with GH/RT 4000.
  • The policy covers consumption of alcohol on Carillion premises, and everyone is advised that reporting for work in an unfit state after consuming alcohol or illegal drugs will lead to disciplinary action.
  • Alcohol purchased during an individual’s meal break, for consumption outside working hours, should be stored in their car/ vehicle wherever possible. When this is not possible the drinks should be placed out of sight, remain unopened, and taken from the office at the earliest opportunity.
  • Any individual suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be requested to attend health screening and any positive results will be dealt with in accordance with the company disciplinary arrangements. An independent provider will undertake such tests.
  • SkyBlue arrangements take into account the Transport and Works Act 1992.

Guidelines

  • Any individual who has an alcohol or drug related problem, advises their manager and requests help, will be given support by the Company to assist with resolving the problems. An independent provider will provide this service.
  • Carillion Rail, Highway Maintenance, Expanded Piling and SkyBlue have introduced enhanced arrangements to support industry regulations and client needs. All employees and SkyBlue Associates (Temporary workers) within these businesses should make themselves familiar with the content of the enhanced arrangements in order to understand the difference between the various arrangements and the reasons for their implementation.
