Contaminated Land Policy

Carillion has a significant property portfolio, which requires the compilation of a formal schedule of contaminated land. As an owner, tenant or occupier of property, Carillion is legally bound to comply with the Environmental Protection Act (EPA 1990), part IIA section 78A-78YC which came into force in April 2000 and addresses the issue of contaminated land.

Carillion is working proactively to limit adverse impact that it may have on the environment and the local community. As a property owner, the group is conscious of the risk that contaminated sites may present to health and well being of the natural and built environment.

To address this, Carillion will:

  • Formally identify and monitor contamination conditions at its properties.
  • Where necessary, implement appropriate site remediation to ensure that a property is fit for its current use and to limit impact for the wider environment.
  • Ensure that during its period of custodianship/stewardship, the Group’s activities do not increase the contamination of any properties.
  • When requested, make available information to prospective buyers, tenants, occupiers, local authorities and any other bona fide interested parties, on the known contamination condition of a property.
  • Be vigilant when acquiring any property interests involving land to avoid exposing itself to costly remediation works.
