Our organisational values support a culture, which aims to build trust with our customers and suppliers, works to develop strong reciprocal relationships with the communities in which we work and believes in improving the quality of life for our people.

Our Values Award recognises those of our people who have lived the Values and “gone the extra mile” in demonstrating their commitment. In 2002, 317 awards were presented.

To encourage our staff to assess their sustainability impacts we developed an individual sustainability scorecard. This is based on our supplier sustainability scorecard and was developed to allow our staff to determine their individual sustainability impacts and hopefully provide them with ideas and encouragement to improve their performance.

Employment Opportunities

We aim to ensure that we provide opportunities for employment to a range of people, we recruit around 80 Graduates each year, provide craft apprenticeships and are involved in training schemes like New Deal. For example, Darren Ashley is employed by Carillion Highways Maintenance, in Nottingham through New Deal.

Operations manager Frank Dunn: “Darren has done very well since joining us and has completed numerous training course. He is a highly motivated young lad and a very useful member of the team. We are delighted to have him.”

Although many of our offices already provide ease of access we are planning to upgrade our office complex in Manchester to ease access for disabled people. The programme will include re-surfacing the front elevation with ramps and planters, providing disabled car parking and upgrading the lift to include a new Braille button.

Employee Reward

We aim to provide reward packages that reflect the market place and support our aim to be an employer of choice. All of our pay is regularly benchmarked and satisfies the legal minimum rates in all the countries in which we operate.

In 2002 the average salary was £18478.

We encourage all of our people to take care of their future by giving them the opportunity to join a Pension Scheme be it Defined Benefit, Defined Contribution, Stakeholder or Industry Specific. In addition many of our people have access to Health Insurance cover and we operate a comprehensive Health Screening programme for those who work in high-risk areas.

The company operates Group and Business level bonus schemes, which are linked to strategic objectives and financial success.

Employee Satisfaction

The organisation has recently been involved in “The Great Debate” a form of staff survey, which takes an interactive approach allowing greater quality of information. The headline results of that process have identified that:

  • Our people believe that Carillion is a Customer focussed organisation
  • 60% of our people say they always feel safe at work

However in other areas we have more work to do!

  • Our people want to feel more valued at work through recognition, involvement and respect
  • 64% of our people say they want more opportunity for dialogue and discussion especially one-to-one interaction and feedback

Our average voluntary turnover of staff in 2002 was 18.87%.

Throughout Carillion there are several people whose roles are key to the successful implementation of our sustainability strategy. This includes, members of our sustainability committee and operations groups as well as the business specific environment and health and safety advisors. However, there are also people within our business who are passionate about sustainability and believe it is fundamental to the success of Carillion.
