Community Investment

As a profitable organisation, which interacts with many different communities within the UK and abroad, we continue to make significant investments to local communities. Our investment in communities is two fold;

  • direct monetary investment to individual community groups or through co-ordinated charities and organisations; and
  • in-kind contribution of staff time and donation of materials

We participated in the Business in the Environment Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement Survey (BiE) and received a score of 78.8%, which is an increase from 72.2% in 2001. We also participated in the first Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Survey. We were placed in the top quintile and received and overall score of 84.6%. The graph below demonstrates our performance against others within our sector and the overall index.

The graph and our scores in the above surveys demonstrate that we are leading others in engaging with the communities and in our support of communities, which includes a balance of monetary and in kind support.

Examples of Our Investments in 2002

We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits (in cash or in kind) to environmental and community initiatives and are members of the Percent Club Index.

Our partnership with The Wildlife Trusts has continued with our annual donation of £25,000 being used to support 5 new projects, building on the 4 projects started when the Carillion Natural Habitats initiative was launched in 2001. Please refer to the case records below for examples of our cash and staff time contribution to the Natural Habitats projects.

Our Business Groups invest in the local communities in which they work. For example, the Caribbean division are very committed to helping local communities and have recorded their monetary and in-kind contribution. Cash contributions were made to a range of community activities and totalled $40,439 and in-kind contributions totalled $39,994.

For example, we provided;

  • Two forty foot trucks for transporting band members and equipment to the National Panorama Steel Band competition.
  • A 25-seater bus designed for persons who are wheelchair-bound.
  • 12 used Computers.
  • Sponsorship for 10 delegates to attend the National Youth Leaders Conference.
  • 2 Engineering Bursaries.

Business in the Community (BitC) has helped several of our projects focus their in kind contribution to community involvement.

For example,

Reading between the lines

As well as improving the reading skills of children from the Saint Thomas Moor Primary School in Cheltenham, through a Business in the Community “paired reading” initiative, the pupils also got the chance to visit the Carillion Building Special Projects GCHQ site in Cheltenham with project staff for a lesson on site safety.

“The children really enjoyed the reading sessions and being allowed to come here is bound to broaden their outlook on life” Head Teacher Sarah Whittick

Graduate Induction Programme

As part of Carillions Graduate induction programme a team of 70 Carillion graduates helped to refurbish St. Chad’s Community Centre, in Wolverhampton. The project was again organised by Business in the Community. The graduates repainted the sports hall, repaired fencing and piping, and cleared overgrown vegetation and litter in the centres grounds.

One of our graduates stated,

‘It’s inspiring that some people make this commitment regularly and work hard for the well being of local people and their surroundings’.

A significant improvement in our community support has been the development of our Stakeholder Map. This enabled us, at both corporate and project level, to identify those people who may have an interest in our activities. Once we identified our key stakeholders we established the most effective way of communicating with them. The process we adopted is based on AA1000 and the maps generated will be progressively developed and implemented throughout 2003. It is hoped that the maps will help us to bring a focused approach to our community investments. This approach will also motivate out staff to deliver better solutions to community issues and will encourage the community to voice their needs and expectations.
