EXTERNAL VERIFICATION STATEMENT
Objectives and Scope
Casella Stanger has been commissioned by Carillion plc to conduct an independent verification of the reported performance of its 2002 sustainability targets. This is the one of the main ways by which Carillion demonstrates its sustainability performance.
The overall aim of the verification exercise is to assess target performance and provide assurance to stakeholders that the information provided is accurate, reliable and objective.
Methodology
The 2002 sustainability targets were verified through independent audits at Carillion plc. During the audit, evidence of target achievement was reviewed. This involved interviews with those responsible for the targets, inspection of internal and external records, document review and interrogation of in-house databases. Progress against a total of 14 targets was verified.
Target Performance
- In 2002/03 the average target score was 93% with 8 out of 14 (57%) targets being fully achieved.
Opinion
- We are satisfied that Carillion has published a complete and accurate reflection of progress against its sustainability target achievement.
- Progress within Carillion is demonstrated by the continued integration of sustainability throughout Carillion at corporate and site level. We were particularly impressed with the scope of Carillion’s sustainability targets, covering environmental, social and economic issues and their alignment with Carillion’s core business values.
- A number of recommendations were made as part of last year’s verification process, however, it is not clear how these were progressed in 2002/03. Therefore, our overarching recommendation would be that Carillion develop a formalised process at the beginning of the reporting year to ensure that these are captured.
As part of our verification we identified a series of further priority recommendations. These can be found on Carillion’s website.
