2002 Sustainability Objectives and Targets

During 2002 we set 6 corporate sustainability objectives, to be delivered by the achievement of 14 sustainability targets. Our targets were audited by Casella Stanger and our performance is detailed below:

Produce guidance for the development of waste management plans to enable two sites per Business Group and four major offices to have commenced adoption of a plan by year end.

Reduce energy consumption across Carillion

Reduce energy consumption in Carillion's Head Offices (Wolverhampton complex, Westlink House and Manchester), measured by kWh/m2, by 5% over 2001 baseline figures.

Reduce average monthly company car business mileage (and hence vehicle CO2 emissions) by 20% (over 2001 figures) through implementation of Carillion's Green Transport Plan. (Target excludes GTRM who are not due to join the fleet policy until later in 2002)

Develop guidance for preparing site-specific transport plans and communicate throughout Carillion.

Demonstrate the business case for sustainability

Each business to provide two case records that demonstrate business benefits (to Carillion and/or stakeholders) of the sustainable development programme.

Establish a process to improve information on waste disposal expenditure within the group.

Engage Carillion's supply chain in the sustainability programme to improve supplier sustainable development performance and assist in achieving Carillion's targets.

Identify Sustainable Development training needs for Supply Chain Category Managers (as part of target D3) through consultation. Develop a bespoke training course and implement training for 50% of Category Managers.

Continue sustainability dialogue with a minimum of 10 key Carillion suppliers, with a view to influencing environmental & social performance through agreement of improvement criteria and targets.

The implementation of our sustainability policy and strategy ensured that 57% of our targets were fully achieved and the remaining 43% achieved more than 80%.

The average score was 93%, an improvement of 90% on 2001s performance. Please note that the target setting process in 2001 was different to last year and this comparison is between the consolidated 2001 targets and the 2002 targets.

The 2003 targets have been set in a similar way to the 2002 targets and a more direct comparison shall be made.

The graphs below detail the achievement of the targets, which have been independently assessed and verified.

In addition to the corporate targets, each individual business group sets specific targets, thus ensuring that the principles of sustainable develop are adopted at all levels within the group, from decisions made by the Chief Executive to those made by Project Staff.
