Land Impacts

Case Records

Our contaminated land policy recognises our responsibility to prevent any potential land impacts. We are pleased to report that in 2003 there have been no environmental prosecutions relating to contaminated land or land pollution.

However, we often work on land that has been contaminated previously and needs considerable remediation work. For example, our contract in Newtown Birmingham, the site of the new Birmingham Postal Sorting Office, had been a manufacturing area for as long as our maps went back - including timber yards, BSA factory, ammunition loaders etc. Remediation included:

A site survey determined the overall nature of the contaminants and “hotspots”.

The “hotspots” were cleared first, the material was sent to a landfill site licensed to receive the contaminant. The area was sampled and tested to determine when the hotspots were clear.

It was important that the contamination on site did not contaminate masonry, rocks, stones etc so these were separated from the general ground.

Cleared ground was then tested to ensure there was no remaining contamination above the allowable thresholds.

Contaminated water was pumped out and disposed off using a lorry mounted "gully sucker".

Royal Ordnance were involved for the removal of gunpowder, ammunition, etc.
