2003 Target: Investigate the feasibility of a biodiversity action plan for Carillion.

Understanding the potential impact of our industry on natural habitats and the wildlife they support has always been at the core of our environmental programme. During 2003 we investigated formalising our commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity with a Carillion Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), this is in line with the government strategy for biodiversity and the creation of a national UK BAP.
The key features to be taken into account for a Carillion BAP would be:
•
The continuation of the Carillion Natural Habitat Fund.
•
A full understanding of biodiversity issues, including the direct and indirect impact we can have on natural habitats through our activities and the products we use.
•
Where biodiversity issues are considered to be important on a project they should develop a site-specific BAP. This is intended to be a simple document but would form an important element of the Environmental Management System.
•
This target will be taken further in 2004 with trial BAP’s on one Roads project and one PFI project.

Carillion Natural Habitat Fund

Carillion has an on-going partnership with The Wildlife Trusts, through the Carillion Natural Habitat Fund. The aim of the scheme is to develop links between our business activities and their local Wildlife Trusts. Carillion has supported 14 projects since 2001, improving conservation, creating links with the local community and giving our staff the opportunity to get involved.
Five projects were completed in July 2003:
• Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Highway Maintenance Area 12.
• Beds, Cambs, Northants and Peterborough with Highway Maintenance Area 8.
• Somerset Wildlife Trust with Carillion Rail.
• Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and Great Western Hospital, Swindon.
• Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, with Carillion Head Office Staff.
We started 5 new projects in July 2003, which are due to be completed in July 2004. For more information click here.
