2003 Target – Reduce average unit of CO₂ emissions per litre of combusted fuel by 10% across the car fleet.
Carillion Fleet Management has shown full commitment to the Carillion plc sustainability targets in 2003 by reducing the company car carbon dioxide emissions by a further 5% since December 2002, this equates to 543432 kg CO2.
This has been achieved through the following processes:
•
Encouraging fleet drivers to move to diesel cars and in particular Euro IV models. These engines have lower CO2 emissions and also ensure the heavy metal particulates, synonymous with the diesel engine, are caught in a trap in the engine.
Ford Mondeo
•
Employees were encouraged to think twice before jumping in the car and making a journey.
•
The company introduced video conferencing facilities across the country to provide employees with a better option to traveling long distances for meetings.
Toyota Avensis
•
The introduction of driver training for all fleet drivers to help educate users on the more efficient ways of driving.

2003 Target – Reduce Head Office energy consumption, measured in KWh/mē, by a further 5% over baseline figures.
Our use of energy in offices primarily stems from fossil fuels for heating, cooling, ventilation and the operation of equipment, such as computers and printers. We have been able to reduce our energy use on our Head Offices by improving the efficiency of the building and raising awareness of the simple behavioural changes we can make to stop wasting energy.
This has resulted in an exceptional 19% reduction of our energy use in KWh/mē, with a 32% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. (For more detail on these results click here).
This has been achieved by:
•
Implementing a clear system for reporting the amount of electricity, gas and oil we use in our four Head Office buildings.
•
Developing plans to reduce energy in each location - the plans are specific to the condition of each of the Head Office buildings.
•
Putting into action the maintenance works which would have the most effective impact on energy efficiency.
•
Continuing to use electricity from renewable resources, which considerably limits our carbon dioxide emissions.
Atmospheric impacts are a key part of our 2004 strategy:
Strategic objective (2010)
2004 Target
To demonstrate peer group leadership in delivering solutions to reduce our impact on the environment and in prudent use of natural resources.
With aim by 2010 for all our offices to meet Econ 19 “Good Practice” level benchmark.
Establish baseline for energy consumption across Carillion estate and an action plan with targets to meet Econ 19 benchmark.
