Resource Use

Case Records

2003 Target: Create a “restricted list” of products that should not be used on our sites.

There are materials that we could use on our projects that may have a detrimental impact on our sustainability. The aim of this target was to review existing product lists and make recommendations to the supply chain on the criteria and process for reducing the use of harmful products on Carillion projects:

Investigating this issue we have found numerous specification lists that have attempted to exclude materials, but such lists have proved ineffective in practice.

In line with other good practice we will encourage a change in emphasis to ensure good practice in their selection rather than excluding specific materials.

A range of product attributes need to be evaluated to identify their sustainability throughout their life cycle. We have developed a simple process of evaluation based on headline issues.

A “black list” for materials posing a high risk to the environment, health or safety may still be needed. This is an evolving list, including materials such as asbestos and CFC’s that do not comply with legislation or British Standards.

We must work with our supply chain as they are a vital link to understanding our wider sustainability impacts and building awareness of their role has to be a priority. For more information on this process and our policy on timber procurement please see our supply chain section.
