Timber

One of Carillion’s core values is providing sustainable solutions and this must also be embedded into the Supply Chain Strategy. One of the areas Supply Chain identified for development was the procurement of timber, moreover, the responsible procurement of timber to satisfy its construction activities across a broad range of projects.
•
The Supply Chain Director gave his commitment and formed a Supply Chain Sustainability Action Group. One of the focus areas for the group was the responsible procurement of timber.
•
The group met with Greenpeace and the WWF95+ Group and agreed the basic principles for the development of a Timber Procurement Policy.
•
After detailed and continuous research with collaboration from Greenpeace and WWF, a Timber Procurement Policy was produced and is due for introduction in the early part of 2004.
•
The Timber Category Manager will spend the next 12 months researching the sourcing of responsibly forested timber as well as educating and influencing clients and the supply chain on the benefits of selecting such products.
2003 Target - Roll out new supply chain performance improvement tool across Carillon’s managed categories.
Carillion’s Category Managers have undertaken Continuous Improvement (CI) Plans with over 40 preferred suppliers.
•
The Continuous Improvement (CI) Plans address a range of subjects including Health & Safety, Environment, Programme & Co-operation/Teamwork, Commercial/Cost, Design and Supply Chain Management.
•
The subjects covered within the plans echo those of the Supplier Performance Measurement systems, thus ensuring a ‘joined up’ approach.
•
The CI plans are reviewed on a regular basis during Category Manager visits and formally reviewed annually where progress is recorded and new targets are set.
•
The ‘toolkits’ designed for each subject area ensure that suppliers can see where they need to aim their expectations to achieve any given ‘grade’.
•
Supply Chain also has the support of the IMS team to further assist the Supply Chain with Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental matters if needed.
