Waste

Case Records . 2004 Targets

2003 Target – Implement waste management plans and site-specific transport plans.

The aim of this target was to ensure that new contracts were showing their commitment to waste management and green transport.

In terms of waste, guidance was given to assist our projects to develop and roll out Waste Management Plans to ensure they are all aware of their duties and legislative compliance. We have raised awareness of the range of tools and training that are available across the company for regulatory compliance and to promote best practice.

The transport plans should identify the impact of business transport. The guidance offers recommendations for controlling and minimising adverse issues whilst promoting good practices. For example Carillion Services worked with East Kent Hospitals Trust to develop this Green Transport Plan Proposal.

2003 Target - Investigate the feasibility of a zero waste strategy for Carillion.

The concept of “zero waste” moves our waste strategy forward from “managing” to “minimising” - as waste becomes fundamentally unacceptable. Being a relatively new concept, the breadth and depth of thinking is undergoing significant development but by taking this aspirational strategy we are encouraged to seek new levels of innovation and efficiency. Therefore the term ‘zero’ should not be viewed as an absolute target but something to strive for.

The push for zero waste comes from a realisation that landfilling waste is not a sustainable option, alongside the evidence that construction work continues to be a major generator of waste.

We have proved it is possible for some of our projects to achieve stretching targets. At Nottingham Tram they achieved their target of a minimum 85% of all spoil and waste materials to be recycled or re-used on site. Also, on behalf of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s central London offices we achieved 91% of waste recovered or recycled.

But we also know that not all our projects have, in the past, followed such good practice. Waste needs to be tackled strategically across all our business groups to stop ineffective waste management.

The long-term objectives to tackle waste, which we are implementing in 2004, will put into action the joined-up thinking and innovative approach of this study.

Waste is a key part of our 2004 strategy:

Strategic objective (2010)

2004 Target

To demonstrate peer group leadership in delivering solutions to reduce our impact on the environment and in prudent use of natural resources.
With aim by 2010 to recycle 70% of office waste and 40% of site waste.

Establish a measure for waste produced across Carillion and, using Zero Waste strategy developed in 2003, demonstrate target can be achieved on 3 contracts and in one major office.
