2003 Target: Create a community strategy for Carillion.
Our projects and contracts have long been aware of the impact they may have on the communities they operate in (highlighted by our case records and being named BitC Company of the Year). The aim of investigating a Carillion-wide strategy was to provide a framework to formalise the existing good work we do. It should allow us to capture the positive activities that have been occurring and encouraging more. For a copy of our Community Policy click here.

A working group with members from across Carillion set out to understand our community engagement, supported by David Cook, The Natural Step and Charlotte Turner, Business in the Community.
•
We have recognised that our community engagement needs to be linked to our business risks and opportunities as an integral part of our business activity.
•
We should incorporate our company values, enabling us to build a more responsible, participative and accountable culture.
•
We need to understand how our business interacts with UK social issues, particularly in areas of regeneration.
•
Although a community strategy is focussed on the external community it is inextricably linked to our employees, for example see our biodiversity or learning and development sections.

Community Relations
Although we work hard to limit the inconvenience we cause to local communities we realise that there may still be problems. We monitor this carefully through recording the complaints we receive on our projects and contracts and collate this information centrally to identify problem areas. Click here for an overview of the complaints received.
The number of complaints decreased by 24% in 2003 compared to 2002. However noise continues to cause nuisance for the communities we operate in.
Community is a key part of our 2004 strategy:
