Learning and Development

Case Records

The skills and commitment of our people provide the crucial link between our sustainability principles and delivering on the front line. We provide training, both formal and informal, for all our employees to raise their awareness and competency on a variety of issues that affect the way they work. This enables us to deliver first class projects and meet the personal goals of our people.

Youth Building Awards, 2003

Carillion’s Construction Training organisation trains more apprentices for the construction industry every year than any other single organisation and we have around 2000 apprentices in training at any one time. Carillion Construction Training’s Ambition Construction Team at Carillion Wembley was judged joint second in the Youth Building Awards. Their submission focused on the experiences of one of our workers affectionately known as Ricky the Brickie.

Ricky’s trainers saw through the struggles of his personal life (court cases, probation, homelessness, debts) to give him the opportunity to prove himself.

They realised he was a quick, streetwise, intelligent (7 GCSE’s) kid that was otherwise heading for trouble they allowed him on a 2 week tester of the Carillion Construction Training bricklaying course.

They noted his commitment to keeping his place on the induction and offered him a place on the intensive training course. There were some trials (legal and otherwise) but Ricky turned out to be a hard working, self-motivated learner who trusted them with his problems and accepted help to overcome them.

Ricky has not looked back and is now working on a Carillion site with a bricklaying company called Lastpress and is on the way to completing the NVQ level 2 qualification in Bricklaying - with a regular income and a place to live he is managing to stay out of trouble.

Finally, Ricky is an ambassador for our training programme, we have since secured several placements with Lastpress and Ricky has been there to help the new trainees settle in.

“The best bit definitely was getting the respect from the brickies on site for what I can do and the support form the staff at Carillion. I owe everything to the staff who are more than teachers they are mentors. They are the sorts of people I would definitely look up to for the rest of my life”

- Ricky, Carillion.
