Community Investment

2003 Target – Contribute at least 1% of profits to community activities

Our status as Business in the Community ‘Company of the Year’ reflects our commitment to engaging with the communities we operate in. This is not only investing money into community projects but donating time to local organisations, using local businesses, recruiting and training people from local communities, playing a positive role in public policy debates – in other words a wide range of activities which will contribute to the social environmental and economic development of our communities.

We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits to environmental and community initiatives, allowing us to be part of the Business in the Community Per Cent Club. Our contributions include in kind contribution - of staff time and experience or donations of materials - and direct monetary investment to individual community groups or through co-ordinated charities and organisations.

Our sustainability target has ensured that this continued throughout 2003, so that we can be part of the index again in 2004. These contributions include:

Carillion Caribbean’s donations to over 50 activities, totalling approx. TT$140,000 (£16000). This includes a diverse range of contributions, including the loan of scaffolding materials for the stage of a community concert, cash for Christmas treats for local schools and sponsoring a child to allow them to attend school.

The time and skills of our graduate team and their activities in partnership with Business in the Community totalled £5880.

The team at the GCHQ project in Cheltenham engaged in many community activities, with the support totalling over £30,000. One of the more innovative activities was providing window cleaning services to several local homes inconvenienced by dust from our works.
