Structure of the Sustainability Team

A key facet of our sustainability strategy was to show that a sustainable approach was necessary for business success and should be integrated within the company’s strategy and values, not just bolted on. Thus, the policy has to help embed sustainability into all of Carillion’s actions. This diagram shows the structure of the sustainability team from Board level (John McDonough, Chief Executive and Roger Robinson, Executive Director) to experts on projects at the local level. While the Sustainability Committee drives the strategic focus, the Operations and Focus groups deliver operational sustainability across the business and capture good practice. The interaction within and between these groups allows clear communication from strategy to practice.

Communication of our strategy has been and will continue to be a challenging task. As well as informing people we must encourage and support them to make cultural changes that embrace the concept of sustainable development. We do this through inductions, helplines, team talks and our job chats. We have integrated social, environmental and sustainability issues into our training and development. We provide a variety of training methods including face-to-face and online training. We are also integrating sustainability into the appraisal process, enabling our employees to be rewarded for thinking and acting sustainably.
