Carillion to pilot Business in the Community key performance indicators that measure Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate community investment, in cash and kind, of over £400,000 in 2000.

Carillion's industry-leading environmental programme, initiated in 1994, is delivering significant business benefits and has been a catalyst for innovation. In line with current UK Government policy and global thinking we broadened and extended our environment programme in 2000 to form the foundations of a sustainable development programme, which is directed by our Sustainability Committee.

Most importantly, the keystones of sustainable development are compatible with our strategic direction and support our businesses in securing long term growth.

Sustainable development
Internationally, sustainable development is defined as the process which 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (Bruntland 1987).

The UK Government defines sustainable development as:

Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment.
Prudent use of natural resources.
Social progress which recognises the needs of all people.
Effective protection of the environment
(DETR White Paper: 'A Better Quality Of Life', 1999).

Both these definitions link economic viability with environmental and social responsibility. There is growing evidence that companies with sustainable development at the core of their operations are outperforming those who do not, as well as protecting resources and improving the quality of life for future generations.

This summary is an outline of the progress we have made in the past 12 months. You can find our detailed Sustainability Report 2000 on:

We're making choices

Our focus on the end user and our collaborative approach are closely allied to the principles of sustainable development. At the same time, many of the tools and indicators used to measure sustainability are equally valid in the development of effective and efficient long term business models, and in risk minimisation.

As an integral part of our sustainability programme we set objectives and targets each year. We are pleased to report that of the 71 targets set across Carillion's businesses for 2000, 49, or 69%, were independently verified as fully achieved, compared with 55% of targets in 1999. A further seven targets were substantially achieved. Key indicators supporting our targets include such things as the level of our investment in environment protection, CO2 emissions, waste reduction, and participation in the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The Princess Margaret Hospital Relocation project in Swindon, in partnership with the Employment Service, established an on-site employment support unit. To-date the facility has proved very successful, enabling trade contractors to search the database for suitable candidates. Currently 105 people have been placed. The facility is easily accessible to the general public and so far 700 people have registered. The project also supports the Government's New Deal Initiative and has successfully placed a number of clients.
