Carillion scoops major environmental award

Construction to services leader Carillion, which has consistently led the industry on environmental issues, has won another major award for its initiative.

The company won the sector for the Best First Time Report in this year's UK Environmental Reporting Awards from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Carillion beat off stiff opposition from companies including Diageo, P Group and Hanson to claim the award which was presented to Chief Executive John McDonough by Environment Minister Michael Meacher.

The judges praised Carillion on six key points
Accepting the challenge of sustainable construction and addressing the issue
Signposting areas throughout the report where more detailed information is available on the website
Including an environmental financial statement covering the construction costs for the Dartford and Gravesham Hospital
Using stakeholder feedback and including evidence of our work with stakeholders (including the socially responsible investment community)
Reporting on the potential barriers facing the company that may prevent it from achieving its sustainability objectives and targets
Including normalised and clear targets

Carillion director for engineering and environment, Quentin Leiper, says, "Previously as Tarmac Construction and now as Carillion we have consistently led the industry on environmental issues and this is the latest in a line of prestigious awards.

"In our new report for this year we will be making further progress in our reporting methods. The report to be launched in mid-April has been extended to a full sustainability report which will include significant quantities of social and economic information alongside our environmental disclosures. Also, for the first time, the report will only be available on the internet site www.carillionplc.com and not in a printed version, although there will be a short summary of the report published in our annual report and accounts which are due out at the same time."
