During 2000 Carillion has broadened its consideration of environmental activities to consider sustainability aspects of what we do. Contributing to sustainable development involves the balancing of environmental, social and economic factors to improve quality of life. The unusual weather patterns in the UK make it clear that we both as a company and as individuals are fundamentally dependent on the earth and the successful operation of environmental functions that clean the air, water and soil.
Much of Carillion has systems and measures in place to ensure Carillion not only adheres to minimal legal performance standards but is adopting good practice, as part of business groups Environmental Management Systems. Our approach to managing our environmental impacts is presented in a separate section. We are working to ensure that all of our business activities will be covered by an independently certifiable
Environment Management System, in place by 2002. This year has predominantly been a year of consolidation with elements of Carillion starting to assess where we can innovatively enhance the impact of our activities on the environment. As a result of our environmental activities Carillion has won a number of environment awards. Our
compliance record and types of complaints received indicate Carillion has more work to do to improve its environmental impacts in some areas. Environmental Co-ordinators, an Environment Helpline, and Training provide guidance on legislation and best practice to assist Carillion with the management of our environment activities. The diverse nature of Carillions work means it is difficult to collect business wide data, since construction contracts and Carillion Services contracts are different in duration, nature and location for each project. 2000 has seen us continue to measure our impact, to develop performance indicators and decide how these can best be used on projects with different specifications, or at a corporate level. The contracts where it is easiest to collect data are major projects, particularly Private Finance Initiative projects.
The following are particularly relevant to Carillions operations. In each section our performance in 2000 relating to each of these activities is given along with case studies outlining good practice measures and business benefits.
Carillion has continued to look at the possibilities of Environmental Cost Accounting as part of our commitment to examine the links between our financial and environmental performance. To this end, we have developed another Environmental Financial Statement and will take this programme further during 2001.
The Products,Services and Stewardship performance section discusses the holistic impacts of our activities.
