Products and Services Performance - Our StewardshipCarillion is a construction to services company providing a whole range of services from facilities management, through to insurance, design, construction management as well as construction itself.
Carillions activities both provide and support the infrastructure, which enables us to work, rest, shop, travel, and maintain our health. Carillion aims to undertake its activities in a manner that contributes to sustainable development improving environmental and social quality whilst developing shareholder value.
In 2000 we have achieved acclaim and had a reduced number of prosecutions. We keep a record of our complaints, which enables us to respond to them promptly and to improve our activities. Carillion Building uses a customer satisfaction survey that enables them to learn how best to improve their client relationships. In 2000 most of Carillions business groups undertook Stakeholder dialogue, the result of which was Stakeholder Dialogue Plans which will proactively guide Carillions engagement with our stakeholders in raising stewardship issues.
Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) infrastructure supports the fabric of society through the provision of prisons, hospitals and roads. As well as other public sector buildings and infrastructure. PFI projects are an expanding area of Carillions business and we have 22 projects worth £1.5 billion in capital terms currently under development, with 12 already signed. For Carillions pioneering involvement and promotion of PFI Carillion was awarded PFI Award 2000.
PFI projects typically operate for 25-30 years and due to their long term nature we are able to influence the design of the infrastructure to maximise their contribution to improving quality of life. Influencing the design of other construction projects is more difficult because of the distinct phases of development - planning, design, construct, operate, demolish. We were therefore pleased to contribute our commitment to enhancing environmental and social quality through our participation in the Castle Vale regeneration project. The Castle Vale project is an example of where considerate and appropriate construction, which is fundamental to regeneration, has worked in the spirit of regeneration. Consulting neighbours, employing local people, ensuring local business moved by the construction process continue to operate during construction and enhancing the quality of the local environment.
Two specific areas where we have improved the impact of our products and services include the development of a contaminated land policy and procedure for delivering energy efficient buildings, this is currently being trialled on a PFI tender. It ensures that energy efficiency considerations are evaluated at the outset of a project.
