Management of our Sustainability Activities
We recognise the need to enhance quality of life for all those upon whom we impact, because this will be crucial to Carillions survival in the long term. Our contribution to sustainability is a result of our economic, social and environmental impacts. Not only do we need to understand these impacts in their isolation but also how they interrelate with each other. To this end Carillion is measuring its progress towards sustainability and making comparisons year on year.
Progress Towards Sustainability
To help illustrate Carillions progress towards understanding its impacts we use the Progress Towards Sustainability Island diagram below:

The yellow line indicates the "water level" over an island with three peaks, which correspond to social, environmental and economic performance. The "water level" represents our understanding of sustainability issues, with those issues understood exposed above the "water level". To understand sustainability we need to understand not only each peak, but also how they link. We currently understand how economic and environmental issues interrelate, exposing the eco-efficiency land between the two peaks. We now need to increase our understanding of the relationship between our social impacts and our economic or environmental impacts. Increasing stakeholder awareness will drive the "water level" down and increase our knowledge of the interrelationship between our economic, environmental and social performance. The objectives and targets set by our sustainability programme are designed to improve our understanding of our sustainability impacts.
