In 2000 our turnover was up 6% to £1.9 billion, 82% of which was in the UK.

We employ 13,840 people directly and are partially responsible for another 14,000 through our subcontractors, and suppliers that work on our sites and projects.
Overseas, we have offices in Canada, the Caribbean, France, the Middle East and the Republic of Ireland.

Carillion, which was listed on the UKs Stock Exchange on July 31, 1999, is the new name for Tarmac Construction following its de-merger from Tarmac. Carillion has built upon Tarmacs leading edge environment programme and now has a sustainability programme which is focused on fully understanding Carillions sustainability impacts, so that Carillion can act most effectively to enhance our quality of life.
Our business activities are divided into five groups as follows:
Carillion Private Finance includes our activities on Private Finance Initiative projects where we have equity investments in the companies we have set up to build, maintain and provide the facilities management and other support services needed to operate the buildings or infrastructure involved, typically for a period of 25 years. Currently 14 projects have been financially closed, we are the preferred bidder for Manchester Magistrates' Court and have been short-listed for a further 17 projects.
Carillion Infrastructure Management provide road and rail maintenance and renewal activities.
GTRM, our joint venture company with Alstom has 10 maintenance contracts and one project division. Together with Centrac and Carillion Rail they serve the UKs railway industry undertaking rail track maintenance, track renewal, signalling and track-work projects.
Carillion Highway Maintenance is responsible for some 22% of routine maintenance and reconstruction of the motorway and trunk road network plus 6 local authority road networks in England.
London Paving is a highly specialised paving and masonry company, Expanded Piling offers specialised ground engineering and piling services on approximately 300 sites each year, while SkyBlue provides skilled labour and staff to construction, maintenance and petrochemical projects.
Carillion Services core business is providing integrated facilities management solutions in four key areas support services, property management, facilities development and building control. It is the leading supplier of non-clinical support services to the NHS and has a large portfolio of contracts with other public and private sector customers including BT, through its joint venture company, Monteray.
Crown House Engineering is one of the UKs leading contractors specialising in the design, installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems.
TPS Consult provides a range of design and technical consultancy services covering architectural design and structural, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. Markfield Insurance provides a full service insurance for both commercial and domestic markets whilst vehicle fleet management services are supplied by Carillion Fleet Management.
Within Carillion Capital Projects, Carillion Infrastructure Projects manages our major civil engineering projects at home and overseas. While Carillion International, with offices in Canada, the Caribbean, France, the Middle East and the Republic of Ireland, supplies construction services in the building, civil engineering, highways, marine, water and hydro-electric sectors.
Our Building sector activities include Carillion Building, the UK market leader focused on developing long-term relationships with its customers and on selected opportunities in the retail, office and leisure sectors. We worked on 65 active projects in 2000.
Carillion Housing is a leader in building, refurbishing and repairing social housing and accommodation for Local Authorities, Housing Associations and Government departments. In 2000 we refurbished 2100 properties and built 600 new homes.
Schal is Carillions specialist construction management and project management consultancy. In 2000 we worked on 25 live projects of which four involved public housing. Maxxiom is a joint venture plant hire company.
