Managing sustainability
Leadership
|
It is essential that we have top level accountability for our sustainability strategy. This is shared between Roger Robinson, Executive Director (Environment and Health & Safety) and John McDonough our Chief Executive (Community, Marketplace and Human Rights), with each Business Group also having Board members responsible for these key issues.
Our Sustainability Committee drives the strategic focus for sustainability. The Committee meets four times a year and draws on the experience of our two external advisors, Jonathon Porrit (Chairman of Forum for the Future and the Government’s Sustainability Commission) and David Cowans (Group Chief Executive, The Places for People Group). Operationally sustainability is delivered by the Sustainability Operations Group (SOG) - initiating, capturing and communicating good practice. This helps to ensure the business groups receive the support they require to help us deliver sustainable solutions. The interaction within and between these groups allows clear communication from strategy to practice.

Delivery
|
Our business groups deliver the broader sustainability strategy through our Integrated Management System (IMS), ensuring we address all the potential impacts our businesses and projects have on the environment and society. They cascade our sustainability objectives and targets through the group. (Details click here). All our projects have a project specific management plan as part of their IMS, which ensures where necessary projects identify sustainability issues and opportunities in a Sustainability Action Plan (SAP). Once these have been identified it becomes part of the auditing process which enables us to determine our success in managing sustainability.

Stakeholder Engagement
|
Throughout this process we need to ensure that we have meaningful consultation and dialogue with our stakeholders. This might be our clients, partners, communities or our own people and dialogue might include, for example, the internet, meetings, newsletters.
