Highlights

Our Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) was 0.24 per 100,000 worked hours in 2005 (2004: 0.37). Tragically, there were five fatalities in 2005 and 67 major injuries.
We achieved an average score of 91% for our 2005 Sustainability Targets, scoring 100% in 5 of our 9 -plc targets.
Our Carillion Natural Habitats Fund continues to work in partnership with The Wildlife Trusts and has now supported 24 projects across the UK since 2001.
We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits to environmental and community initiatives, allowing us to be part of the Business in the Community PerCent Club.
518 employees were presented with Carillion Values Awards in 2005 for their achievements and for "going that extra step".
17 out of 22 Great Debate (our internal employee satisfaction survey) questions have improved in 2005.
The Power of Engagement event, which involved 267 managers from Carillion, achieved an average of 86% satisfaction score, where 93% of participants now believe there is support in their Business Group for the Power of Engagement message.
Following the new UK Government strategy on Sustainable Development we have developed a new “sun diagram” and framework, which aligns with the Government’s “shared priority” areas for sustainable development.
The framework entitled “how we define our sustainability policy and impacts” clearly links the development from our 1999 model to the new 2005 strategy and to delivering business benefit.
Our new “Sustainability Policy” was developed this year and launched at the Senior Managers Conference comprising our 250 senior managers in March 2006.
We are now working on developing a “Sustainability Excellence Model Matrix” in line with the successful AC2E model for Health and Safety Management. The model will act as a tool to guide our progress and measure our sustainability performance.

Reporting

This report follows current best practice, including the ACCA Environmental, Social and Sustainability Reporting on the World Wide Web Guidance and the Turnbull Report.
