Community
“By engaging, respecting and understanding our community stakeholders we will make a positive contribution to their environment and quality of life”.
Addressing community and social issues is a key focus area of our sustainability strategy. We believe that by maximising the opportunity to support community initiatives, we can positively contribute towards the quality of life of the communities in which we work. The nature and transient location of our activities provide us with the opportunity to impact on many different community groups.
In order to more effectively communicate with these groups and to help ensure that we meet there needs we have developed a stakeholder map. This map has assisted us in identifying the community groups that we shall seek to liaise with to help ensure that where appropriate our activities have positive impacts. In addition, the map provides a more focused approach to our positive community actions. This approach and the links created will also help our people increase their understanding of community issues and, we hope, will encourage communities to voice their expectations and needs.
We work with the homeless, schools and universities, the Wildlife Trusts and many local communities and organisations including the WWF and Greenpeace.
Sustainability Week 2005
We held a third very successful Sustainability Week with more activities than in previous years. Once again the week was selected to coincide with the World Environment Day on 5th June. Over 150 events took place throughout the company and over 300 pledges were made to benefit the environment and communities. We believe this shows that our people are becoming more aware of sustainability and we are delighted to see how they are using sustainability week to get involved in activities, lead a more sustainable lifestyle and celebrate the good work we do in the community.
2005 Standard – Contribute at least 1% of profits to community activities
We continue to contribute over 1% of our profits to environmental and community initiatives, allowing us to be part of the Business in the Community Per Cent Club. Our contributions include in kind contribution, of staff time and experience or donations of materials, and direct monetary investment to individual community groups or through co-ordinated charities and organisations.
2005 Target 1 – Produce guidance for, and roll out Community Engagement Framework with particular focus on schools and local authority roads – Target score 100%
