Managing sustainability

Leadership

It is essential that we have top-level accountability for our sustainability strategy. This is shared between Roger Robinson, Executive Director (Health and Safety, Sustainability and Environment) and John McDonough our Chief Executive (Community, Marketplace and Human Rights), with each Business Group also having Board members responsible for these key issues.

Our Plc Sustainability Committee, which meets three times a year, drives the strategic focus for sustainability. Following the retirement of our Chairman Sir Neville Simms in May 2006, John McDonough, our chief Executive, now chairs the committee. He has been joined on the committee in 2005 by Adrian Bull, Paul Kirk and Don Kenny, the three business group MDs. Other staff members of the committee are Executive Director Roger Robinson, our directors of Strategy, Human Resources, Safety and Sustainability, and Engineering and Environment. The committee still has two external advisors/members, Jonathon Porritt, Forum for the Future and Chairman of the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Commission and David Cowans, Chief Executive of the social housing association, Places for People Group.

At an operational level, sustainability is communicated and delivered through the Sustainability Operations Group (SOG). The group works on initiating, capturing and communicating good practice throughout the business. This helps to ensure the business groups receive the support they require to help us deliver sustainable solutions. The interaction within and between these groups allows clear communication from strategy to practice.

We are pleased to report that Sir Neville Simms has been appointed to chair the Government’s Sustainable Procurement Task Group, which is helping to initiate a step change in driving sustainability into all Government procurement (£128Bn). Carillion has contributed to the work of the task force through its working groups.

Delivery

Our business groups deliver the broader sustainability strategy through our Integrated Management System (IMS), ensuring we address all the potential impacts our businesses and projects have on the environment and society. They cascade our sustainability KPIs, objectives and targets through the group. (For details click here). All our projects have a project specific management plan as part of their IMS, which ensures where necessary projects identify sustainability issues and opportunities in a Sustainability Action Plan (SAP). Once these have been identified it becomes part of the auditing process, which enables us to determine our success in managing sustainability.

Stakeholder Engagement

Throughout this process we need to ensure that we have meaningful consultation and dialogue with our stakeholders. This might be our clients, partners, communities or our own people and dialogue might include, for example, the internet, meetings, and newsletters.
