We believe that becoming a more sustainable business will help us become a more successful business.
Our success in becoming a more sustainable business is demonstrated by our ability to recruit, develop and retain excellent people, our ability to win more work and our ability to improve our profitability.
We are proud of our record on sustainable development and this website contains many examples and best practice from across the group, for example:
- We achieved 4th place in the category of bigger companies with high environmental impact and 8th place overall in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies 2010. This achievement is a result of the hard work and involvement of Carillion people in putting sustainable systems into practices so thank you for making us one of the UK’s Best Green Companies.
- Carillion retained its Platinum rank in the 2010 Business in the Community (BiTC) Corporate Responsibility (CR) Index. The index ranks companies’ sustainability performance, and our score of 96.5%, was higher than any other company in the support services sector
- Carillion is a member of the FTSE4Good Index, which comprises of companies meeting recognised sustainability standards.
- To date, 100% of our UK and Middle East operations have accredited environmental management systems and in Canada, Carillion’s Joint Venture, TWD Roads Management Inc., was certified to ISO 14001 in 2010, making it the first part of Carillion Canada to achieve certification. We have a programme to extend certification to other parts of Carillion Canada in 2011.
- We continued to make progress towards Target Zero in 2010; the Group’s Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) was 0.10 reportable accidents per 100,000 people hours worked (2009 AFR: 0.13). In real terms this means that more than 100 fewer people were injured in 2010 than in 2009.
- We conduct regular employee surveys and our latest scores compare favorably with those of other top UK companies.
- In 2010, we generated 23.8 tCO2e per million turnover, a reduction of 34.89% compared to our baseline for 2006 (32.31 tCO2e).
- See what our external advisors, Jonathon Porritt and Julia Cleverdon had to say in our Annual Sustainability Report.
