Deeside Park Junction Improvement Scheme donates a hedgerow

Business: Carillion Roads

Location: Chester Zoo

Date: March 2007

Business benefits included the potential for use of other unwanted materials at the zoo, excellent public liaison, and positive Employee involvement.

Community benefits were that hedge was provided free of charge and was delivered to the zoo by the project team.

Elephants at Chester Zoo were in for a treat when Carillion donated a three week supply of their favourite treat – hawthorn hedge. The zoo’s ten elephants had two lorry loads of the hedge that came from the A5117 Deeside Park Junctions project.

The project team was exploring a range of environmentally friendly solutions to deal with 200 metres of unwanted hawthorn hedging. A couple of zookeepers passing the scheme came up with the answer. For elephants it seems that hawthorn takes the biscuit. Elephants are usually fed hay and fruit but hawthorn is understood to be a special treat. The Carillion team involved in this were extremely pleased to be able to provide the hedging for the elephants and watch it go to very good use.
