During the tender process for the Joseph Rowntree School contract in York, the Carillion team took the initiative in researching the requirements, hopes, and ideas surrounding the facility. This has been achieved by holding a series of workshops with the students and staff of the school discussing potential ideas and features that the pupils would like to be incorporated into the new facility. The workshops focused on the key areas of architecture, landscaping, engineering, ICT and furniture. Within these areas, representatives were encouraged to discuss positives and negatives surrounding the proposed ideas, and asked for any other suggestions they may hold. This effective communication method raised many interesting questions from a user perspective; some of their contributions are as follows
- |
Is the shape of the gateway necessary, or is it simply forsaking space for style?
- |
Is there an opportunity for renewable energy sources, and if so what would the aesthetic and acoustic effect of this be?
- |
An orienteering function for physical education (PE) through the landscaping
- |
Automated windows to remove ‘stuffy’ feeling in classrooms
- |
Sedum roofs for controlling water
The ideas raised were collated and where possible are to be taken forward in design revision and evolution to ensure that the facility fulfils the requirements of its future users.
