Carillion Facilities Management (CFM) has taken a significant role in the support and facilitation of a London Consultancy client in its challenge for the year 2007 which was “The Carbon Challenge”. The goal of the client was to:

“Reduce our carbon footprint by 25% without compromising our dual firm mission of delivering lasting impact to our clients and developing and exciting our people”

This ambitious aim for the year inspired many in the organisation to become involved in the challenge. CFM saw it as a natural part of their service to become strongly involved by partnering with the client. The CFM team provided expertise, facilitation, support and co-ordination of implementation throughout the year. Ongoing services included Agony Aunty Green, a website for enquiries and regular Green Bingo.

The reduction of business flights was encouraged by the client providing top of the range immersion suite video conferencing facilities and introducing web conferencing technology. A huge amount was achieved throughout the year, with 150 people actively involved in organising the processes with work streams divided into Travel; Energy procurement; Energy Consumption; Offsetting; Home and Waste. The combination of interactive education and empowerment, allied with increased service and technology provision, ensured that the target of a 25% carbon footprint reduction was met by 2008 and exceeded, by a further 6%, by the end of January 2008.

To ensure a continued positive impact from the year, the CFM team is working with the client to extend this remarkably successful campaign going forward, in the spirit of continual environmental performance improvement, demanded both by the client’s and CFM’s certified Environmental Management Systems.
