We believe that becoming a more sustainable business will help us become a more successful business.
Our success in becoming a more sustainable business is demonstrated by our ability to recruit, develop and retain excellent people, our ability to win more work and our ability to improve our profitability.
We are proud of our record on sustainable development and this website contains many examples and best practice from across the group, for example:
- We’re delighted to have been rated one of the very best green companies in Britain by The Sunday Times. Carillion is winner of it’s class – Best Green Company in the UK for medium to large firms and came 2nd place overall in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards 2008.
- We demonstrated our leadership by topping our sector with a Gold ranking in Business in the Community’s 2007 (reported in 2008) Corporate Responsibility Index.
- In 2007, thousands of people used their handprint to make a personal pledge to get involved with a local charity, recycle more, waste less and cut down on car journeys. The handprint theme has been adopted to promote sustainability issues across the group ever since.
- In 2007 Carillion was named one of Top 20 most ethical firms in the UK, by The Observer’s Good Companies Guide.
- We conduct regular employee surveys and our latest scores compare favourably with those of other top UK companies.
- We have introduced a Sustainability Excellence Model, developed to drive a cultural change towards sustainable development.
- We continued to make progress towards Target Zero in 2007: the Group’s Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) reduced by 22% to 0.14 reportable accidents per 100,000 man hours worked (2006: 0.18) which ranks with the best in our sector.
- In 2007 we received Zero prosecutions relating to environmental incidents.
- To date around 99% of our UK business is operating under an accredited ISO14001 management system.
