Carillion's Sustainability Journey

Our sustainability journey began in 1994, driven by the advent of increasing opposition to infrastructure developments. This resulted in the formation of an independent advisory panel, the company’s first environmental policy and report, the creation of an environmental management system and links with environmental organisations such as the WWF.

By 2000, we recognised the importance of bringing together the impacts our business has on the environment with those it has on society and the communities in which we operate, and of understanding how all these impacts affect our financial performance. We therefore broadened our improvement programme to focus on all these areas, which are core elements of sustainability.

This in turn led to the development of our sustainability policy, strategy model and Sun Diagram. Since then, our policies and strategy model have been continually reviewed to drive continuous improvement. More recently, we have introduced our Sustainability Excellence Model, which enables us to benchmark sustainability across various business units and to communicate this to our employees.
