Governance
Acting ethically and with integrity is fundamental to the development of a sustainable business and these are an important element of corporate governance.
Carillion operates an Ethics and Business Integrity Policy for all its operations as part of the Group’s system of internal control set by the Board.
Whistle blowing
Employees are encouraged to raise any issues that concern them at the earliest opportunity with their line managers. A confidential ‘whistle blowing’ hotline is provided by an independent third party for those who prefer to report concerns in this way.
Setting standards
We are committed to eliminating bias and unlawful discrimination in relation to job applicants, employees, our business partners and members of the public. We undertake training throughout the Group to raise awareness and to explain the standards of behaviour Carillion expects.
We have grievance and disciplinary policies in place and our people have had Competition Act training to ensure we comply with the required standards. Regular updates on competition law are mandatory for our senior executives.
FTSE4Good Index
Carillion is a member of the FTSE4Good Index which measures the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards. We believe that being part of the FTSE4Good Index clearly demonstrates our sustainability credentials.
Our Values
Carillion’s values are Openness, Collaboration, Mutual Dependency, Professional Delivery, Sustainable Profitable Growth, and Innovation. They define the way we work together with our colleagues, our customers, our suppliers and our partners and encourage and support high standards of corporate responsibility.
We provide training to help our people understand the importance of our values and how they can apply them in everything we do. We have appointed ‘values champions’ across all our businesses to provide and support training and to promote best practice.
Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index
Participating in Business in the Community’s Corporate Responsibility Index enables us to benchmark our performance externally. Since the inception of the Index in 2003, Carillion has improved its score each year. In the 2008 Index (awarded in 2009) Carillion scored a ‘Platinum’ performance ranking of 96.5 per cent, topping the index average and the average in our sector, which demonstrates that Carillion not only continues to be the leader in its sector, but also performs to a level that compares favourably with companies in all sectors. As Carillion were awarded Platinum status in 2008, we were able to retain this in 2009 without completing the CR Survey. Nevertheless, we completed the survey for our own assessment.
