Sustainability Leadership and Strategy
Leadership
Our commitment to the principles of sustainable development means that our corporate objectives are supported by a strong sustainability strategy.
Managing Sustainability
Our commitment to sustainability is driven by our Board, supported by a Sustainability Advisory Committee. This committee is chaired by our Chief Executive, John McDonough, who has overall board responsibility for human rights, customers and consumers, and includes a number of senior directors drawn from across our businesses, who ensure that it maintains close links with the Group’s operational activities.
We have a Chief Operating Officer – Richard Howson, who has lead responsibility for Sustainability Carillion-wide.
The committee also benefits from external expert advice from Jonathon Porritt, Chair of the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Commission and Founder Director of Forum for the Future, and Julia Cleverdon, former Chief Executive of Business in the Community.
We also established a senior business leader’s forum in which key players meet regularly to share best practice and inform the development of our sustainability strategy and its dissemination around the Group.
In every business, sustainability representatives develop annual business-specific sustainability plans and objectives. These support delivery of our corporate strategy and business plans.
Strategy
Our strategy for sustainable development is aligned with the four priority areas defined by the UK Government in its sustainable development strategy, Securing the Future. These are
- |
Sustainable communities and workforce |
- |
Natural resource protection and environmental enhancement |
- |
Climate change and energy |
- |
Sustainable consumption and production |
In order to deliver our strategy, we set specific annual targets for each of our business units and for the Group as whole.

We have identified 12 behaviours and activities which affect the delivery of our business objectives, across the four priority areas of the UK Government’s sustainable development strategy.
Each behaviour and activity is assessed and linked to specific objectives, targets and key performance indicators (KPIs), which form the Sustainability Excellence Model. This is directly aligned to our business strategy and objectives, which means that delivery of our Sustainability Excellence Model is fundamental to the success of our business.
Sustainability Excellence Model
In 2006 with the assistance of The Natural Step / Forum for the Future and our internal sustainability experts we developed a “Sustainability Excellence Model”. This tool guides our progress and measures our sustainability performance across the business. The model has been adopted across the group and action plans have been developed to ensure continuous improvement.
Stakeholder Engagement
We have a high level Stakeholder engagement framework to help our business groups identify who their stakeholders, how we should engage with them and the tools available to support engagement.
