In order to assess our achievement of these targets an independent consultancy has audited and verified our targets and the findings are presented in the table above.

Independent Assurance statement

The overall aim of this verification exercise was to assess target performance and to provide assurance to stakeholders that the information provided in relation to target achievement is accurate, reliable and objective. During the audit evidence of target achievement was reviewed. This involved inspection of internal and external records, document review, interrogation of in-house spreadsheets and discussions with appropriate staff responsible for the delivery of targets

Based on this review of the information provided to support the delivery of the targets Bureau Veritas confirm that the allocated scores are accurate. Bureau Veriats can also confirm that where reference is made elsewhere in this report to data linked to the targets that such data is used in an accurate manner.

The targets and report respond to issues which have been pre-selected by Carillion that are of material importance to the organization and its stakeholders. These pre-selected topics cover a range of issues which are important to assess Carillion’s sustainability performance. More details on each topic can be found on this website.

In general Carillion have achieved highly in most areas. Achievement is generally higher in targets that are measured and delivered by the group (e.g. People Satisfaction) than those that are addressed at the business group level. This is attributed to the fact that the business group targets are addressing core sustainability issues which the company (and the industry) is finding difficult to address. For example, the target relating to waste management was difficult for the group to achieve. However, it should be noted that some business groups excelled in this area, for example, National Building implemented waste management plans on all projects and collected waste and recycling data from all projects on a monthly basis.

This decision to address the core sustainability impacts of its business is a reflection of Carillion commitment to changing the way it operates, to deliver sustainable solutions and to ensure that it ‘Makes Tomorrow a Better Place’.
